George’s smuggling file

Three Bags Full

George’s smuggling file is the most consequential part of the cache Rebecca discovers beneath the dolmen: unlike the packets of contraband, its value lies in what it records. A representative of The firm identifies the information as a potential threat to the company, but Rebecca declines to act on it. The file passes back into the man’s hands without its contents being disclosed, leaving its power clear and its secrets contained.

Recovery from the Cache

Rebecca finds the file among the objects hidden under the dolmen. The cache includes many small packets and a larger, squarish package, as well as the file’s papers. She gathers everything into her skirt and carries it to the shepherd’s caravan. The file therefore emerges not as an isolated discovery but as part of a concealed consignment whose different contents have different uses and risks.

The distinction between those contents becomes clear when the man arrives to retrieve them. He counts the packets and identifies one missing packet as sheep feed, then confirms that the file is present. The rectangular package is a separate object: Rebecca suggests it is a videocassette, and the man says he has never heard of it before pocketing it too. The inventory separates the file from both the packets and the cassette, even as all three belong to the same recovered cache.

Information and the Threat to The firm

The man acknowledges that the file contains information Rebecca could use to inflict a severe blow on The firm. This establishes its practical importance without revealing what the papers say. The file’s danger is thus conveyed through the collector’s assessment, not through disclosure of its contents; the reader knows it can threaten the company, but not precisely how.

That possibility turns the file into more than a record of the hidden operation. While in Rebecca’s possession, it offers her a means of acting against the organization connected to the cache. Yet the evidence does not show her examining or publicizing the papers. Their significance rests instead on the choice she makes when their potential is explicitly raised.

Rebecca’s Decision and the File’s Return

Rebecca tells the man she will do nothing with the information. He believes her, and she gives no further reply. The exchange leaves a tension between capacity and action: the file could damage The firm, but Rebecca refuses to make it an instrument against the company. Her decision is consequential precisely because the man recognizes the threat and still accepts her word.

The man then retrieves the packets from the skirt she has used as a bag, counting them as he goes. He notes the missing packet and confirms that the delivery is complete, including the file. The papers are returned to the collector rather than exposed or used, closing the episode with the cache accounted for but its informational contents still undisclosed. The file’s narrative force lies in that contained possibility: it briefly gives Rebecca leverage, then leaves with the man who came to reclaim it.
